Snowflake #93 Ornament Pattern

The Snowflake #93 Ornament Pattern is a cute little 1 inch ornament that can be used to make earrings, necklace drops or put a bunch together for a necklace and bracelet. You can also use them on Christmas presents with your gift tag, makes a really cute addition to any gift. Or how about adding them with a ribbon at the bottom of a wine glass.

A = Miyuki 11° SEED bead, 72 beads
B = Miyuki 11° SEED bead, 30 beads

Nymo D Thread or Fireline (4 or 6 pound)
#11 or #12 beading needle

Start by waxing and stretching your thread, use Nymo D or C-Lon & a #11 or #12 beading needle. Tie in a "stopper" bead, leaving about an 8" tail and begin at step #1.

Round 1
Pick up 18A, make a circle and go with thread through the 1st and 2nd A beads just added.*Please note, the illustration is just a representation of the beads, they actually will be just a circle of 18 beads. They are drawn this way because in the next round the beads will be pulled up into this shape after adding the Round 2 beads.

Round 2
a) Pick up 2A, go with thread through the next A bead in R1, skip over 1 A bead and go with thread forward through the next 1 A bead in R1 as shown
b) Repeat (a), around 5 more times
c) Continue with working thread forward through the 1st A bead in the first repeat of (a) this Round.

Round 3
a) Pick up 2A, go with thread down through the 2nd A bead, R2a.
b) Pick up 1B, go with thread up through the 1st A bead, added in the next repeat of R2a.
c) Repeat (a, b) around 5 more times.
d) Continue with working thread forward through the 1st A bead in the first repeat of (a) this Round.

Round 4
a) Pick up 2A, go with thread down through the 2nd A bead, R3a.
b) Pick up 1B, go with thread right to left through the 1 B bead, R3b.
c) Pick up 1B, go with thread up through the 1st A bead, added in the next repeat of R3a.
d) Repeat (a, b, c) around 5 more times.
e) Continue with working thread forward through the 1st A bead in the first repeat of (a) this Round.

Round 5
a) Pick up 3A, go with thread down through the 2nd A bead, R4a.
b) Pick up 1B, go with thread down through the B bead, R4b, right to left through the 1 B bead, R3b, and up through the B bead, R4c.
c) Pick up 1B, go with thread up through the 1st A bead, added in the next repeat of R4a.
d) Repeat (a, b, c) around 5 more times.
e) Weave the working thread into the snowflake and end.

Making Hangers for your Snowflake
Make it with beads, make a loop with as many beads as you would like, or use a piece of fishing line, making it invisible with mono-filament, or a piece of pretty ribbon. Add ribbon after your snowflake is stiffened.

Finishing
After the snowflake is complete, you can stiffen it with Sc Johnson #11182 27oz Pledge Futureshine.  It is a great stiffener, it stays clear even on the crystals. Test it first if you use seed beads with dyed colors to make sure the floor finish doesn’t remove the colors.

Pour enough of the Future® Shine into a small container that is wide enough for the ornament. Float the ornament into the Future® Shine and push it around a bit with your finger. (After I am done, I use a funnel and pour the extra back into the bottle)

Take the ornament out and blot both sides with a paper towel.

Put the ornament on a piece of wax paper, shape and flatten it and let it remain on the wax paper to dry. (If you use plastic wrap, the beads can stick a bit to the wrap, so it needs to be moved around a bit to prevent this from happening.) If your ornament needs a little extra flattening, use two pieces of wax paper and sandwich your ornament in between; put a book on top of the wax paper for about an hour. Take the book and the top piece of wax paper off the ornament and let dry overnight on the bottom piece of wax paper.

LOVE this! But did find first few rows fiddly... Sigh... Gorgeous result, though, so worth getting my skills honed :)

Wonder if it will work with 8/0 beads??? Only one way to find out :)

This is very lovely snowflake. I usually make couple pairs of earrings with this pattern for friends every year.
I use 0,17 mm Fireline and 8/0 round Toho or Miyuki seed beads and because I bead very tight, there is no need for any stiffening.
